MANDY'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE
By Anita Golden, USA
Mandy woke up in her very comfy bed with a smile on her face. Her room was bright and cheerful, but Mandy's smile quickly faded as she remembered what had happened yesterday. Her older sister had gone away to camp for the whole summer. Christa was a wonderful big sister and Mandy was going to miss her terribly.
Mandy had to fight back the tears. Summer was going to be awful! She was not old enough for school yet and her only real friend was Christa. What would she do all summer without her?
Mandy looked around her room, trying hard to fight the tears. She looked at her books, her toys, and her stuffed animals. All these things usually made her happy. Suddenly she spotted her Furby, CoCo. He was a first generation Furby - all black with pretty blue eyes - and she remembered how very happy she had been when she'd found him under the Christmas tree a few years ago. He was such fun!
He could always make her smile. Maybe he could make her happy today, despite the terrible sadness she felt.
Mandy got out of bed and took CoCo off the shelf, giving him a little tilt as she did so. His eyes opened and he yawned. "Cock-a-doodle-doo!" he cried. "Me, CoCo," he said, and then he laughed. Mandy smiled. "Doo be doo be doo," sang Coco.
That made Mandy laugh, and she hugged Furby. "You make me happy," she said to him. Then she told him her troubles and why she felt so sad.
As she spoke to him, CoCo was quiet and seemed to be listening to what she said. When she finished talking, CoCo blinked, looked right into her eyes, and said, "Me love you. I will be your friend this summer!"
Mandy looked very closely at CoCo. She'd never heard him say anything like that before. Furby said, "Close your eyes, Mandy. Let's play!"
Mandy was so surprised, but she did what he asked. She closed her eyes. "Open now!" CoCo said, and she did.
Mandy couldn't believe her eyes! She was at a carnival! There were brightly colored lights everywhere, and music, and the smells of wonderful foods. There were rides, too, with a Ferris wheel, a merry-go-round, teacups, and more.
CoCo laughed and said, "What are we waiting for? Let's play!"
Mandy took CoCo and they found a seat on the teacups. Mandy noticed all the other children getting on the ride also had a Furby with them. Soon the ride started, and Mandy and Furby laughed and laughed.
When it was over, Furby said, "Where to now? How about the Ferris wheel?" Mandy was a little bit afraid of going up so high and had never been on a Ferris wheel before, but she felt she could do anything with CoCo at her side. So they got in line and were soon seated on the Ferris wheel. Mandy gave Furby a little hug and confided, "I'm scared." CoCo looked at her and said, "Don't be afraid. It will be FUN!" Mandy felt her fear go away, and she even smiled as the wheel began to move. Soon she was laughing and having fun!
When the ride stopped, Mandy gave CoCo a big hug and said, "I'm having a wonderful time because of you!" CoCo laughed and said, "Me, too! Let's get some cotton candy. Me hungry!" So Mandy got some pink cotton candy and shared it with CoCo.
"Yummm!" said Furby.
"Yummm!" said Mandy.
They walked all around the carnival, seeing all the sights and riding on all the rides. They had a wonderful time.
After a while, Mandy thought it might be time to go home. She was suddenly afraid. She had no idea how she got there, so how would she get home? Furby said, "Don't worry. All you have to do is close your eyes and wish."
"Wish? Wish for what?" asked Mandy.
"Just wish to be home, waking up in your own little bed, and you will be," answered CoCo.
Mandy closed her eyes and wished. She didn't feel anything happen and wondered if Furby could be wrong. But she opened her eyes and, sure enough, she was in her bed! She felt confused. Could it all have been a dream? Then she felt something next to her in the bed. She reached down and pulled CoCo from under the covers! Now she was even more confused. She was pretty sure she hadn't brought him to bed last night. "Did I dream it or not?" she asked aloud.
Suddenly, CoCo winked at her, and she knew. Mandy snuggled back under the covers. She hugged CoCo and smiled. It was going to be a wonderful summer!
